Instructions

  • Introduce the ethical dilemma (See ‘Materials’) chosen according to the characteristics of the group and present the context. Make sure you explain that some choices can lead to the end of the whole game. Take care of presenting the story step by step
  • Each participant has some minutes to reflect and individually choose how to behave for each step of the dilemmas
  • For each step, ask all the participants to share their opinions and choices in plenary, inviting them to reflect on the consequences of their decisions
  • Ask the participants to write down three words to sum up their feelings, reasoning and choices that arouse at each step of the ethical dilemma (this final point aims aims to highlight what changed in their own mind during and after the ethical dilemma activity)
NB. It is always necessary to encourage plenary discussion by being as inclusive as possible. Pay special attention to groups with very young people with potentially less awareness (14–18 years old) and do not let them be passive, especially during the individual work. To avoid this situation, it is possible to let them read the context, situations and questions and ask them if they understood the text, trying to facilitate their concentration during individual work

POSSIBILE VARIATION

  1. If you think it is necessary, at the very beginning, you can reflect on the concepts of entrusted power, abuse of power and conflict of interests by asking the participants to write three words defining, in their opinions, these concepts on post- it notes. Then, everyone place them randomly on a flipchart and the group discuss them (instead of post-its and flipchart, it is possible to use tools like ‘Mentimeter’ enabling young people to write words on their smartphones and send them on the screen)
  2. To facilitate the participation (especially of young groups) it is possible to perform the ethical dilemmas as a theatrical activity. To do so, by the way, it is necessary to previously develop a script for the different roles.
