Instructions

  • Divide the participants into groups and make them choose a leader, who will have the delegated power of making the sculptures (5 min)
  • The leader has to imagine scenes of ‘power’ or abuse of ‘entrusted power’ without explaining to the others. This could be suggested with an example as follows: ‘Try to remember an everyday situation you have seen, which struck you as racist or hostile to foreigners’
  • Now the leader, in silence, starts to shape the others’ bodies into a sculpture trying to represent that situation of power. It is possible to shape their postures, gestures and even expressions. Other members of the group become the audience (5 min)
  • When the sculpture is ready, the audience is invited to move around it, in order to observe all the details of the statues.
  • It is necessary to have a sculpture session group by group and not simultaneously (5 min)
  • After taking a moment of observation, every person involved in the sculpture can change one thing (e.g. a gesture, a position or a facial expression) to turn the represented situation into a positive one
  • Start a discussion among the audience by asking questions like:
    • What do you think the initial statue represented?
    • In your opinion, what was the transformation between the first and the final statue?
    • Now ask questions to the statues: How did you feel? In your opinion, what was the meaning of the statue? Have you ever actually experienced the situation staged?
    • When the first group has finished, the activity can be repeated with the other groups and so on
NB: In case the exercise triggers strong feelings in the participants, be prepared to start a discussion about emotions and experiences “

POSSIBILE VARIATION

You can also create a collective sculpture made by the whole group, representing an allegory of a non-violent fight against abuse of delegated power. There is no longer a sculptor, so the statue will be created by all participants. At the end, ask everyone to comment on the sculpture
