Instructions

  • Divide the participants into groups and ask them to write down on a paper one name of a possible source, actor, and institution that can serve as a basis to start collecting data (5 min)
  • Collect the papers and arrange them on a wall, making sure to eliminate duplicates. In the plenary session, each group presents the source/actor/institution they have written, trying to explain why they think they are important. Then leave time for debate and reflection, where the sources/actors/institutions can be modified, deleted, or added (20 min)
  • Divide the participants into new groups, making sure to balance their skills, and give the participants the data collection table, preferably in digital and shared format (See ‘Materials’)
  • Randomly assign sources to be checked and make sure each group has access to a digital device (preferably a computer or a tablet) (40 min)
  • At the end of this research phase, in a plenary session, each group presents the results of their research, with a video projector. They should make sure to mention any difficulties they faced in their work (30 min)
  • Merge all tables into a collective one and open a debate on the quality and quantity of the data found by asking the following questions (30 min):
  • a. After the first search, did you need additional data? Why?
    b. Is there any particular data that you consider necessary, but you were not able to find?
  • If the group is not satisfied with the data collected so far, proceed with the phase ‘asking for the data’, inviting them to reflect on what actions they can implement to find more (20 min)
To reach this goal, for example, you can develop the activity Let’s make the FOIA request!
