Instructions

  • Make all the participants move in the space (15-40 min)
  • Create a standing circle with all the participants. You ask two people, chosen randomly, to follow the palms of your hands with their faces from a distance of about 15–20 centimetres
  • Saying the magic word ‘MANUS!’ you begin to freely move, leading the two participants with your hands. When you say ‘STOP!’, the two followers have to freeze
  • – will then ask four other people to follow with their faces the shoulders of the two people already involved
  • At this point, you take back your place, say ‘MANUS!’ and start to move again. When you say ‘STOP’, all the followers freeze
  • Continue to add more participants by asking them to follow different parts of the body of the people who are at the extremity of the chains
  • When everyone has been involved, you ask someone to take your leading role. The new guide obtains ‘the magic’ by scrubbing their hands over those of the previous guide. The participant who is taking this role leads the group until the moment they choose to say ‘STOP’, ending the game session
  • At this point, you ask the group if someone else wants to take the leading role. If there is nobody who wants to do it the game can end, otherwise it is possible to do 2–3 more rounds
NB: Take care not to mention the word ‘power’, while moving in the room: it will be the topic of discussion – Make the participants think about the experience and discuss it all together (15-20min). You can lead the reflection in this way: a. Asking those, who took a leading role: How did you feel being followed by others? Did you prefer to guide or be guided?
b. Asking those who only had a following role: How did you feel in this situation? Was it easy or difficult to follow? Why?
c. Asking everyone to reflect on the topic ( The”magic” is the “entrusted power”)
NB: It may happen that during the activity the group tends to laugh and comment out loud. The group must be invited to participate, commenting only at the end of the activity. Sometimes it is necessary to accompany the participants in case any anxiety appears.

POSSIBILE VARIATION

Manus can be continued with Manus-2, if there is enough time. It is suggested to make a symbolic break between the two session (e.g. 1-2 minutes break or just clapping the hands)
